在国内外众多数学奥林匹克中，参赛者中一向男多女少。传统上不少人认为在数学上男生一般比女生强。尽管这种说法缺乏实际研究数据的支持，但数学奥林匹克参赛者男女失衡的事实促使了“中国女子奥林匹克”（CGMO）的诞生。
2002年8月中国数学奥林匹克委员会在珠海举办了首届女子数学奥林匹克，参加对象是在读高中女生，此项活动的宗旨是为女同学展示数学才华与才能搭设舞台，增加女同学学习数学的兴趣，提高女同学的数学学习水平，促进不同地区女同学相互学习，增进友情。
著名数学家王元院士题赠女子数学奥林匹克：“索菲·热尔曼、索菲娅·柯瓦列夫斯卡娅、埃米·诺特，这些伟大女数学家的名字与她们的突出成就足以证明女子是有很高数学天才的，当然是很适宜于研究数学的”。
CGMO每年举行一届，比赛时间在每年8月中旬，参赛的代表队已由第1届的28个队发展到现在的51个队，每支代表队包括两名领队（其中要有一名女教师），4名高中女学生。美国、俄罗斯、菲律宾、中国香港和澳门也都曾派队参加过CGMO。
CGMO分数学竞赛和健美操比赛。数学竞赛分为第一天、第二天，每天4道题，每题15分，满分120分，考试时间为8：00～12：00，试题难度低于国际数学奥林匹克（IMO）。竞赛评出团体总分第1名和个人金、银、铜牌。个人总分前两名的同学直接进入IMO中国国家集训队。2007第6届女子数学奥林匹克个人第1名陈卓同学直接进入2008IMO中国国家集训队，后经过努力进入国家队，获得2008第49届IMO金牌，这是1995年后中国女生获得的唯一一枚IMO金牌。
