面对新型冠状病毒感染的肺炎疫情的严峻形势，重庆市科协常委、重庆师范大学副校长、国际系统与控制科学院院士、重庆市应用数学中心主任、中国数学会竞赛工作组成员杨新民教授带领研究团队科学预测疫情发展，用科技力量驰援抗疫攻坚战。
该研究团队通过建立时间序列模型、Logistic模型和Bernstein函数，采用计算机编程，在较为准确地预测了2月8日至2月15日疫情发展趋势的基础上，又对2月16日至2月22日全国、重庆市、湖北省孝感市、全国（不含湖北省）、湖北省的累计确诊病例数分别进行了预测。该团队的研究报告《新冠肺炎疫情分析与发展趋势预测报告》已上报重庆市科学技术协会，并被重庆市科协《科技工作者建议》2020年第3期单篇采用，且得到副市长屈谦、熊雪肯定批示。他们的研究成果为各省市后续防疫工作的开展提供了有针对性的建议，为科学防疫做出了贡献。
